Totoro is My Neighbor

First, corrections to the last post. Amsterdam isn't happening, unfortunately neither of us can really afford the trip. Also, I'm not on the lacrosse team either. I can't afford to purchase all the equipment. Third, I actually DID speak to my Grandmother on the phone, and surprisingly enough she spoke in Mandarin! Yaaaay she's finally learned I can't understand Taiwanese. Moving on.

I spent the past weekend in Cleveland with Anna. Didn't really do too much, just watched a bunch of Miyazaki films and helped her pack up her apartment for Louisville. Unfortunately, all that movie watching reawakened an obsession for all things Miyazaki... one of my better childhood memories is sitting on the fuzzy carpet in Katherine's old old house and watching Nausicaa. I didn't know what the movie was at the time, since it was in Japanese dialogue with Chinese subtitles, but I remembered all the bugs and the forests and the song that she sings to the Oahu, and that movie's stuck with me for the rest of my life. There's something about the worlds in his movies; they're natural, timeless, untouched and magical... Anna and I decided that if there was a Miyazaki religion, we'd be the first disciples :) I don't know, I definitely would like to live somewhere so nature-y. Aaaaah I'm obsessed!

We left for Louisville on Saturday, but first we stopped at Presti's, which is a neighborhood bakery in Cleveland's Little Italy. I don't know why, but after going there, combined with watching Kiki's Delivery Service the night before, I decided that I would REALLY like to open a bakery in the future. I realize I have the independent business and food bug in my blood, and it feels wrong to ignore it. A bakery isn't too big of a store, it has the neighborhood feel, and I'd get to bake and cook! Plus, Anna mentioned that you could sell little gifts at a bakery too, and I could definitely incorporate graphic design and photography into the gifts and packaging. This is definitely many many years down the road, but it's something I'd like to work towards.

So Anna and I got back in Louisville around midnight, and I spent Sunday with Ben at UK. ...I really wish I didn't come to a school so far up north, but I suppose that's how things go. I decided (this weekend was pretty decisive...) that I'm only going to stay at Kent to get my bachelor's, and go elsewhere for a job or a master's. Kent really just doesn't have too many opportunites, and it's too small of a town for me to enjoy. Of course I might find more in the town when I have a car, but I'm sure I'd just end up driving to Cleveland or Columbus all the time. But Kent does have a great VCD program and offers commercial photography, so it's worth staying.

Something else I've decided! I'm getting a CAT! Hopefully by this summer when Ashley and I move into our apartment. What I'd REALLY like is a puppy, but I'm not settled enough for one yet. If the VCD program is really as intense as everyone says, I probably won't have anytime to spend with a puppy, but at least a kitten will fulfill my need for a cute companion :) :) :) And I've never had a pet before, aside from fish and the teenage mutant ninja turtles, soo I deserve one by now! I'm 20!

But what I really need FIRST is a freakin' job. See, this town is so small, and the school is so large, that all the jobs around campus are taken. I need a job for the money, but mostly just to take up all this free time that I have. I'm tired of being holed up in my dorm... does anyone want to come visit me?

siiigh. i want a giant camphor tree in my back yard. with a magical tunnel through the undergrowth so i can tumble upon a GIANT totoro. i would spend all day gathering acorns for him.

Why not just work at the GAP again?
